Amos Oz-- My Michael

My Michael is a novel written in Hebrew by the Israeli author Amos Oz,
published in 1968 by Am Oved, and translated into about thirty languages.

The book describes the love and marriage of a young woman against the
background of 1950s Jerusalem. The book manages to probe into the
mystery of the world of the Jerusalem girl, and follows the nightmares that
come to control her. In the process, the reader comes to know the general
atmosphere of Jerusalem, its neighborhoods, and its alleyways.

Excerpt from this book

" I can see right through you. I can read your mind. You're saying to yourselfe:
' What's going to happen next? Where do we go from here?' Am I right?"

Michael reddened suddenly like a child caught stealing sweet:

" I've never  had a regular girlfriend before."
    " Before?"

Thoughtfully Michael moved his empty cup. He looked at me. Deep down,
underneath his meekness, a suppressed sneer lurked in his eyes.

" Till now."
